I can only speak for Sydney as its where I have lived my whole life but it's almost always more expensive to own than rent. That's why ppl largely choose to rent as they get to live in a bigger house than they could afford to buy or be able to live closer to work etc.
If it was cheaper to own than rent there would be a lot less ppl renting.
