In about 1972 the rabbit virus myxomotisis was released into the wild rabbit population. I was about 12 years old and my dad was a farmer member of local vermin and noxious weeds department, we had the job of catching rabbits alive and injecting the rabbits with the virus.
OH&S horror of horrors this is how we did it.
I sat on the bonnet of Dads HG holden sedan as he drove and held the spotlight. I had dads semi automatic .22 rifle and would fire a shot over the head of the rabbit, they would mostly then lay down or be stunned, i would put the rifle down on the car bonnet behind me and run flat out and pick up the rabbit and hold onto him behind the ears and then take him to dad for injecting. I often had bleeding stratches on my hands and arms from the rabbit when I held them wrong. Catching them was easiest in long grass.
