I had a mate years ago who "wanted" to quit smoking...he tried patches, he tried hypnotism, he tried the gum, he tried everything but said he could not go a day without a fag.
He did confide in me that he really loved smoking and enjoyed it but it was the new baby and his wife that were the drivers behind the need to quit.

He recognised then that he needed to WANT to quite, to make a decision himself to quit before he ever would. A conscious decision to quit and not expect someone or something else to make the decision for him.

He did quit eventually, after he had decided he must be the one to decide and he must be the one to make the decision.

...both my wife and I quit smoking cold turkey when she became pregnant.
