contrary to Descartes, the Buddha taught all "I am", however subtle, is manufactured 'becoming'.

just like the process of interaction when a man (who was formerly a stranger to her) becomes a woman's husband, similarly, every sense of "I am", however subtle, is a process of conditioned manufactured becoming

the Hindu philosophers like Adi Shankara obviously did not reach the state free from "I am"

if our mind is calm, it can read below how Buddha distinguished sense experience (observing) from the becoming of "I am"
