But the Soviet era did help produce some of the powerfully poetic music of Dmitri Shostakovich, as he used affectations of militaristic jingoism in his symphonic compositions to mask a deep and sorrowful disaffection with what his homeland had become. A very brave artist who seemed to do this while musically mocking the evil brand of patriotism controlling citizens' lives.
