It's not aeons ago that we had the Spanish Inquisition to sort out the sheep from the goats. Before that, the Crusades to keep non believers on their toes. Does that sort of methodology really work?

As for the radical elements in Islam, some understanding of the pressures that made them that way might assist. Thinking we should blast them into oblivion only makes more of them. You radicalise moderates by blowing up their infrastructure and homes.
That's been the US approach and it's worked a treat.

You defeat ignorance with understanding and a bit of evenhandedness.
