The coalition govt has been rocky for a while which really seems down to the reversal of popularity of the Lega & the 5Star since they formed their partnership, plus the emergence of Salvini as the dominant partner, some would say the de facto PM. The trigger for the present crisis is the high speed rail link with France. The 5Star are opposed to it, the Lega joined with the opposition to push it through parliament. There appears to be a major, maybe unhealable split now with the Lega hoping elections will give them govt in their own right. A risky play.
