On their webstie they say: "At Jetstar we never cancel flights on the day of departure for commercial reasons, or when we have not sold enough seats."
But in this case, they notified the cancellation the night before (so not "on the day of departure"). So my guess is that this doesnt apply. But yes, you are right, you really have to check the fine print.
