The Herald Sun can reveal taxpayers will foot the $100 million pay offer now being rejected by the union.
Metro has offered a 17 per cent rise over four years, including a one-off 3 per cent payment to ensure the successful rollout of the State Government’s 24-hour transport plan.
But the Rail Tram and Bus Union refuses to surrender “steam train era” conditions that stop drivers riding more than 200km a day and driving the same line twice in a shift.

Internal Metro documents, seen by the Herald Sun, show that an average driver, who with penalties and allowances is paid $140,000, drives 124km in 3.58 hours and is able to go home, but is still paid for an eight-hour shift
