    TODAY’S rail chaos is the result of a union refusal to give up ancient job conditions, including allowing train drivers to work just three hours but be paid for a full day.
    The Herald Sun can reveal taxpayers will foot the $100 million pay offer now being rejected by the union.
    Metro has offered a 17 per cent rise over four years, including a one-off 3 per cent payment to ensure the successful rollout of the State Government’s 24-hour transport plan.
    But the Rail Tram and Bus Union refuses to surrender “steam train era” conditions that stop drivers riding more than 200km a day and driving the same line twice in a shift.
