We are going to need a real leader - not only to facilitate coming up with the ideas - let alone executing the ideas -------------- but,
selling the ideas
Selling them to their own party - probably selling them to the opposition - and selling them to the populace - along with probably having a lot of the media on side --
a tremendous ask IMO.
Indeed - the only way I can see it even remotely being possible is to take Australia on a quest - get everyone on board - to take us to a future place that pretty much none of us believe can exist at present.
And, of course - right now - we don't even see the train coming down the track.
Sure, we see a bit like recession - but, in reality - things are still fairly comfortable for most - at least we can eat so far.
What we can't see is the future of industries ------------ masses of them - transcending from the industrial/computer age into the age of robotics.
At first glance - we think - oh robots - yes, they will take some jobs - but, it will just be like computers - they will create more than they take ------------------------------- wrong.
This is not the same at all.
And, then, we will think -------oh, well, the next resources boom will repair the budgets ------
wrong again -------- this time it's different.
If we are incredibly lucky - we have about half a minng boom left (and, I would bet against that as well).
Entire governments have depended on mining booms in the past ----------sorry - it ain't going to happen again.
The resource companies are now pretty much fully foreign owned - not like before.
The industry that was spun off in Australia -------- whoops - now it is spun off to Chinese machinery companies - and, if it needs repair ------- it doesn't get repaired - it gets replaced (by China).
Manpower -- staff ------- we have only seen the beginnings ---- robotic trucks - getting common - by the time the next boom arrives - they will be ubiquitous. So will the digging machines.
The last remaining stand of income ----------- royalties -------- fine - but, with many other nations now coming on stream for resources ------ companies will go with whoever has the cheapest royalties (and bargain with them for it) and maybe labour costs as well --------- how will we fare? --- Dismally.
Food production ---------------- forget it -------- we will get nothing out of the labour - machines again. We will get nothing out of the machinery - China again. We will get a pittance out of the lease of land - they will screw us down as is our farming history. And, we will get nothing out of royalties ----- there are no such things.
Aussie safety nets are dead ------------ dead and gone.
Not only that - but, the entire world is going to have to learn how to exist when machines do the work and humans don't.
We will have to learn how to let people have money - when they can't earn it - we are just going to have to throw the economics books out the window - this is a new era - and it is on our doorstep - right now, in our lifetimes.
Don't even think it will effect our children and not us - it is knocking at the door now - this decade.
I have believed for a long time that Australia is in the box seat to do something about this if we realise it.
But, will we?
I believe we had no show under Abbott and Hockey and Co - and no show under Labor - forget the Greens - they have no bloody idea.
Has Turnbull? ------------- Oh God, I hope so - and, I hope he is good enough to recognise it, sell it and execute it ----------- if we are to survive - it is going to be the equivalent of going to war in scale - it will make the snowy scheme look like a picnic I think.
The price of failure is poverty as far into the future as one can see and beyond. The prize will be a remarkable future - hopefully for all.
This is a huge ask for any government or leadership - and a huge ask for a conservative government - but, IMO - they are the only one's capable of it.
I live in hope.
