PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya today announced the operating license of Lynas Corp in Pahang extended, but the period was shortened to 6 months compared to a 3-year habit.

The Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) announcement ended speculation on the fate of the rare earth processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan.

The Lynas operation license will expire on 2 September and its factory in Gebeng, Pahang has become a controversial cause since 2012 due to the disposal of low-level radioactive waste, with the environmental Lovers Group, Pakatan Harapan's politician and the community The local holds objection for health reasons.

The Australian rare Earth producer has repeatedly defended the safety of its factory by citing various reviews conducted by local and international agencies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Lynas is the only most largest rare earth manufacturer outside China. It processes rare Earth mined from the Weld mountain in western Australia.

Rare Earth is 17 metals used in batteries, computers, televisions and smartphones.

On 3 August, Lynas reportedly said it had already deposited cash-backed bonds of US $42.2 million (RM175 million) to the Government of Malaysia to fund the long-term waste management at its factory in Gebeng.
