i don't think there is any definitive answer to the question " what precisely does the word love refer to"

these are generic questions, not specifically at you,

why do you love your parents when you are small? because of a need?

then why do you love them when you no longer have a need? because then they have a need?

why do you love your partner? because of sex?

then why do you love them after the passion has died?

if your partner (and i pray they don't) becomes horribly disfigured, why do you keep loving them? (and i pray you do)

why do you love your dog? because he fetches the ball??????

why do we love what we don't have or can't obtain?

why do we love at all?
