William James is non-sense. more blind faith on your behalf. this William James may as well be Jesus or Jehovah given the way you relate to this William James
your obsession with material consciousness is more materialism. it is unrelated to this forum
Buddha also taught consciousness is momentary (but arising dependent on a sense base) and impermanent
however, the reason why Buddha taught this was so the mind would not cling & would not have unrealistic expectations (desires) towards consciousness because clinging & unrealistic expectations lead to suffering
Buddha wanted people to be happy & liberated. this is religion & philosophy
where as William James appears merely a material scientist
i have already warned you because you appear so blind to suffering that when you are dying, in your inability to deal with that experience, you will probably cry out to "God" or "Jesus" to save you
now listen to Buddha because Buddha knows best. about consciousness Buddha said:
What do you think, monks: if people were to carry away the grass, sticks, branches and leaves in this Grove, or burnt them or did with them what they pleased, would you think: These people carry us away, or burn us, or do with us as they please?" —
"No, Lord." — "Why not?"
Because, Lord, that is neither our self nor the property of our self." —
"So, too, monks, give up what is not yours! Your giving it up will for a long time bring you welfare and happiness. What is it that is not yours? Corporeality... feeling... perception... mental formations... consciousness are not yours. Give them up! Your giving them up will for a long time bring you welfare and happiness."
