DJ Market Underestimates Risk of Copper Supply Disruptions -- Market Talk
1958 GMT - Australia and New Zealand Banking Group says the risk of more disruptions in
the copper market in 2017 has risen considerably, with the market only partially
factoring in the probability of disruptions. It says over 14% of global supply is under
threat from strike action in Chile this year. "The early signs aren't great, with wage
negotiations at Escondida already breaking down," ANZ says, referring to the BHP
Billiton-operated (BHP.AU) mine. An average year for strike action could remove 300,000
tons of copper supply. "A jump to elevated levels, as seen during years with
above-average strike activity in Chile, could lead to a supply deficit of 500,000 tons,"
ANZ says. Compounding this is the threat of concentrate exports from Indonesia being
halted, it adds
