Map: Moree 2400 A Seismic survey to see if there are coal seam gas resources near Moree will be conducted next month.

The Department of Planning has given Eastern Star Gas the approval it needs to conduct the project, which will mostly follow shire road reserves.

ESG Spokesman Peter Fox says the project is expected start mid-June, and will take around four to six weeks.

Mr Fox says some private land-holders will be approached to carry out the project on their land.

He says it's early days but there is the potential to pursue a coal seam gas extraction project in the future.

"We've got a significant coal seam gas resource south of Narrabri, but this seismic survey is really trying to tell us how far that resource extends north of that existing resource.

"But really we've got to do the work interpreted to really have a good feel for what it might tell us."

"Hopefully we'll have an opportunity to come back and say we have got a project to talk to people about what that would mean if we could develop it.

"We hope through that process we could actually get all those stakeholders including the council comfortable with what the project means because we believe we can put something forward that is a good outcome in terms of been environmentally responsible, but also delivering benefits from the project itself."
