Great insight. Possibly an attempt to sound manly and add gravitas. The female voice can be beautiful when it's natural, but fake manliness - like any fake persona - is ugly. Shrillness is just what the voice does in a woman when there's fear/anger, and such people usually end up on the ABC, in politics or campaigning women's rights. So many women have disowned their female traits because they see them as weak. Historically, it's probably men who have caused a lot of these problems in the workplace through belittling and discrimination.
