    Israel hits Hamas training ground
From Adel Zaanoun in Gaza City
    September 7, 2004

THIRTEEN members of the radical group Hamas were killed and 45 wounded in an Israeli raid in the Gaza Strip today, one of the deadliest Israeli attacks since the start of the Palestinian uprising four years ago.

The militants, mostly members of Hamas's military wing, the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades, were undergoing military training on a football pitch in eastern Gaza not far from the border with Israel, Hamas sources said.

They said witnesses had initially reported Israeli tanks were involved, but the Israeli military, which confirmed the attack, said it was carried out by combat aircraft.

A military spokesman said the airforce had "targeted a training field during trainings (sic) of Hamas terrorists".

"The targeted location was known as a gathering field of Hamas terrorists to be trained in the planting and activating of explosive devices, launching of RPG and Qassam rockets and practising infiltration into Israeli communities and military posts.

"The training was led by senior Hamas terrorists who were involved in the carrying out of deadly terror attacks and attempted attacks."

The dead and wounded, most of them wearing combat uniforms, were taken to Gaza's Al Shifa hospital where hundreds of Hamas militants, some of them armed and masked, as well as curious onlookers gathered as the news of the attack spread.

"Vengeance, vengeance" some of them shouted.

Medical sources said 13 people were killed and 45 wounded, four of whom were in a critical condition.

"An Israeli helicopter fired five missiles at the ground," one Hamas militant who was present during the attack said at the hospital.

Another said: "It is a huge massacre for which the enemy will pay dearly. We will never forget our martyrs."

The football pitch was named after Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin who was killed in an Israeli air strike in March. His successor as head of the radical Islamist movement, Abdelaziz Al-Rantissi, was also killed by Israel in April.

Today's attack came just days after a double suicide bombing left 16 people dead, in addition to the two bombers, in Beersheva in southern Israel.

The Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades said it carried out those bombings in revenge for the killings of Yassin and Rantissi.

A day after the suicide attacks, the deadliest in Israel this year, Israel vowed to strike at Hamas leaders wherever it found them, even overseas.

Israel's military chief of staff General Moshe Yaalon told the Israeli parliament that the army would continue to fight Palestinian militants "at all levels".
