I had experience of the ME in the eighties, as the American firm I worked with, from time to time, sought people, from here and the USA, to work in the ME especially Saudi Arabia. The Thought Police would regularly visit employees' rooms, and tear up any magazine showing even a hint of a woman's skin. It was not unusual for those Americans with an Arabic background to fall back into their oudated, misonigyst, ways when they were sent to the ME.
