Najib: Opposition lied to Kuantan folk over Lynas plant

PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) said the people of Kuantan were lied to on the Lynas rare earth refinery issue before the last general election.

"The Opposition said it was like a nuclear power plant and it would emit dangerous radiation. But now that the Lynas refinery has been operating for five years, the Opposition is quiet.

"There is not even a peep from them because the election is over," Najib said at the opening of the meetings of the Pekan Umno branches here Sunday.

He said in fact, background radiation levels were higher among the people who live in Kuantan than those who live near the Lynas plant in Gebeng.

"But overall, the radiation is very low as determined by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

"Kuantan voters were incited by fear but now we can see there is no more Lynas issue.

"Lynas has already invested RM2.7bil and spends RM300mil annually. It is also providing 550 jobs for locals," said Najib.

He said false or inaccurate information could have huge effects on the direction of the country as evident by the Brexit incident.

Najib said in that case, a decision was made by people who were largely fed wrong information.

"Now the United Kingdom has to exit the European Union. They have changed course and can no longer turn back.

"We must remember there are people who are spreading wrong information to try to confuse us and make us lose confidence in the Government," he said.
