mike68, yes fibre cables are built and selected for the specific purpose and conditions that they are required for.

As per the other links I included in my post which explained the 60 year lifespan of fibre and some of the design and material requirements the fibre cable needed for use in the NBN network.

Like the submarine cables, the NBN cables are designed for their particular purpose. Which includes the environmental conditions the cable is exposed, including flooding.
