NDIS - a necessary service to the disabled

    back in the 60s I started working at a Govt run 'hospital' for people with disability.

    one thing I noted, even in my teen years, was that some, even though they had enormous difficulty with speech, could make themselves understood and were clearly not "retarded" as was the vernacular at the time.

    the old institutions were places of abuse, both physical and sexual, and kept these people locked up in many cases from admissions in early childhood till the day they died.

    the NDIS is the final requirement for govt to enable the change from the old system, at direct cost to the govt with no benefits, to giving these people the opportunity to develop themselves and their lives to be useful, productive citizens.

    modern tech has also enabled many with communication and self-help. now many are employed and paying taxes. this is the benefit that is rarely mentioned wrt NDIS.
