"What makes them forgeries?"

If you can copy paste things of value potentially an infinite amount of times with virtually nil effort, but those copies are identifiable, the market will value these things less and less over a period of time. I don't know how I can explain it more simpler to you.

"How do you know they are not just another cryptocurrency?"

They are a cryptocurrency, they just also happen to be forgeries. Definition of forgery:

"The action of forging a copy or imitation of a document, signature, banknote, or work of art."

Definition of forge:

"Produce a fraudulent copy or imitation of (a document, signature, banknote, or work of art)"

By definition, they are forgeries.
