I completely agree with your second paragraph - yes there is no doubt the Coalition was bleeding votes to Hanson and Abbott was assigned to deal with her.
I don't think your first paragraph is correct - specifically 'Labor on the other hand is gaining not bleeding votes'. I suggest Labor is bleeding votes on the left side of its base to the greens (as is the liberals to the right). Labor has its own problems trying to keep its left wing loonies under control (as does the liberals with its fringe).
