BROADCASTER Alan Jones says Queensland Premier Campbell Newman is suing him for defamation over comments he made about the state’s Acland coal mine.
Jones, who is broadcasting an election special each weekday on Fairfax Radio’s 4BC, revealed on Friday morning he has received a statement of claim for defamation filed in the Queensland Supreme Court.
“Nice to hear from you, Mr Newman,” Jones said.
“You remain a bit of a political novice if you think that’s the way to win an election or to silence people, you need to actually think again, but thanks for writing.” Jones has attacked Mr Newman over the approval of an expansion of the Acland mine on the Darling Downs.
He claims he was given a commitment by the Queensland Liberal National Party (LNP) prior to its historic 2012 election victory that stage three of the project would not proceed.
But after Mr Newman took office, the government announced a compromise on the issue.
“All these mining outfits are treated like royalty,” Mr Jones said this morning.
Comment is being sought from the premier.
