Mauro, some detectors cannot detect at parts per million or just in the lower range of millions...
If you can't detect it what good is a detector ???
What if for arguments sake just with Carbon Monoxide a detector's maximum range is 100 PPM.
It is acceptable to work at 30 PPM for Max 8 hours.
What if the concentration was 400 PPM your detector is max'd out and you think it's OK to work for 30 minutes..  But in actual fact 400 PPM is at a dangerous level.  8 hours at that at you could be in trouble.
    That's only Carbon Monoxide.
What if it was a more dangerous gas like Radon.  Lung Cancer causing. Why would you not want to detect it at the Billion or Trillion scale ??  Any exposure to that is NOT good...

The more accurate and smaller particles sensed the better...  Simple as that !!

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, according to EPA estimates. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year. About 2,900 of these deaths occur among people who have never smoked.

    Carbon Monoxide....
According to Safe Work Australia the maximum recommended exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) gas measured over an eight hour period is 30 ppm (parts per million) based upon a Workplace Exposure Standard.
