The National Government has thanked the Isabel Tripod Leaders and the people of Isabel Province for their willingness to consult on a best way forward to develop the proposed nickel project in the province.
Over a period of two months, Government Officials from the Ministry of Mines and the Prime Minister’s Office have been visiting the Province from village to village – talking with people on the Government’s position on the proposed nickel project and also gathering the views of people on the Government’ s position.
The most recent dialogue was held early this week in Honiara with Isabel Tripod Leaders including the Provincial Government, the Church and the Isabel Council of Chiefs. Representing the Government was the Minister of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Hon Bradley Tovosia and senior officials from the Ministry and the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
During this week’s dialogue, significant resolutions were reached in a communique which was signed by Tripod Leaders and handed over to Minister Tovosia for further consideration by relevant government authorities.
Minister Tovosia said the proposed nickel mine project in Isabel should be viewed as a “test” on the objectives and overarching principles of the National Mineral Policies.
“It should also have the benefit of operation under a reformed framework. A view that should maximise benefits for all stakeholders,” Mr Tovosia said.
He also acknowledged the efforts from Government officials from the Ministry of Mines for their informative presentations that paved a proper platform for the Tripod leader’s decision making.
The resolutions together with reports from previous consultations will presented for cabinet consideration in coming weeks.
Any outcomes from cabinet will set the way forward for all parties to be engaged in developing a proper development plan for the proposed nickel project.
The Isabel Tripod leaders attending the recent dialogue included Premier James Habu and his Deputy Premier, Bishop Ellison Quity of Isabel diocese, Paramount Chief of the Isabel Council of Chiefs, Bishop James Mason, representatives of the Isabel Mothers Union and other officials.
