ACT to again criminalise sex with animals

ACT Attorney General Simon Corbell has tabled proposed legislation to reinstate the offence of bestiality.
The offence was repealed in 1985 before the ACT obtained self-government.
The law will apply to all sexual activity between a person and an animal, with a maximum penalty of 10 years jail.
Mr Corbell has told the Legislative Assembly, the Government was working to re-introduce the offence before the incident involving former Canberra Raiders player Joel Monaghan.
Monaghan quit the Raiders to spare the NRL team any further embarrassment over the publication of a lewd photograph depicting him simulating sex with a dog.
"The re-introduced offence and the scope of and penalty for the offence have been proposed without influence from the recent publicity," Mr Corbell said.
"However it is timely to be reminded why an offence like this is important."
