    An accurate result can be obtained if the sons waited for a horse to foal.

    That then gives 18 horses and after dividing them up as in your answer-- giving 9 to first, 6 to second and 2 to the third the foal could be sold.

    Then the first son gets half of the proceeds.

    The second gets one third and the last gets one ninth of the sale

    The remainder of the cash being 1/18 of the sale price could be donated or put towards a family function.
