A contraction in population growth is an economic contraction. The Government is spending a lot of money, predominately on health and social security/welfare. These costs are increasing because people are living longer and facing various health crises. One might laugh at the whole "Sydney becoming a city of 20 million people", which is an exaggeration, however the ABS has the NSW population sitting between 12 and 14 million by 2066. It's currently at 7.5 million.

Plus the immigrants tend to be better quality people, with better food, culture and work ethic.
