    We observe Trump as though history never existed.

    But history tells two almost universal truths about populists — they exploit people movements to ruthlessly build their own power and interests, and they divide their nations by hysterical rhetoric, demonising their enemies, extolling their champions and endlessly presenting as “action” leaders.
