Bouncers are there to deliberately intimidate the batsman, maybe hurt him, put some fear into him. And catch the odd dill who swings instead of simply ducking. No other reason. Easily stopped. Any ball bouncing on the pitch more than say ten yards in front of the crease is a six run penalty to bowling side.
