    Whoever becomes leader will hold a poisoned chalice. No way they will win the next election and they must know it.

    It seems more about saving the furniture, influencing pre-selections, and shaping the long term character of of the Liberal party. Under Turbull, it would be likely that moderate seats would be buttressed and conservative seats would be allow to fall.

    This really is a fight for the shape of the Liberal party rather than picking someone who can seriously challenge Shorten.
