i umpire amateur footy , have done for 20 plus years.....the standard of AFL umpiring is very ordinary. There are 3 guys, 6 eyes scrutinising the play and yet they still get so much wrong...some really basic stuff.
amateur umps cop the flack from this level of incompetence every weekend. When the afl guys stuff it up we cop alot of blame.
having said that, the standard this year was better than last year which was shocking....geting rid of geisham helped.taking out technicality and putting in common sense would also help alot.
there was one 50m paid against port coz the marker took off almost immediatley but the ump failed to call play on immediately, the marksman took off at the same time but because the ump didnt call it the markman copped 50m and the hawks had a shot on goal.....the commentators said the ump had no choice but in fact the ump did have a choice...he should have called play on but didnt and his mistake cost the team
