With coal prices generally retreating to their current "non-exhuberent" levels. We can see API2 & API5 & NEWC being priced relative to each other's kcal. Low Vol PCI has a kcal of 7-8000 depending on moisture/ash content. Recent sales of both PCI and SSCC at 160/t also demonstrate that kcal is possibly the most important price factor outside of market demand.

Those sale prices of $240/t for met coal are for the high fluidity HCC. Note carefully that BHP is not selling any of their mines which produce this relativly rare product... and the new owners of the mines being sold will need to go "cap in hand" to BHP when they find out how they need to blend their low fluidity SSCC up to meet customer specifications.

FWIW, IMHO, the mines being sold are not much more than thermal operations which are being run as if they are HCC operations. The mines being sold spend money on rainbow coloured buses while virtue signalling about how they have diverse workforce that was selected on immutable characteristics such as race/gender/sexuality instead of hiring people based on their ability to do the job. Not really a good place to "work" but a great place to "be yourself"... which doesn't necessarily correlate with low cost tonnes in the product yard.

Seriously, not unless the price is right... and this could mean that BHP needs to pay someone to take these mines... although, I personally believe that they're worth at least a token dollar.
