How much private views matter really depend on context. They are significant for a teacher / journalist etc because those views may be communicated overtly / covertly to the target audience. Less so for a tradie, business owner, chef etc.
However the standard should be whether those views have affected the work, not whether someone holds those views. Some people are able to put aside personal opinions and participate objectively in the work place.
If personal views are a reason for being fired, then about 40% of journalists need to be shown the door because their views are clearly strongly held on subjects they are commenting on.
