Most of Eastern Ukraine was won by Russia from Crimean tartar and ottoman empire in 18 century after many wars. City of Mariupol was founded by Cossacks, Nikolaev founded by Potemkin favourite of Catherine the great, Odessa was founded by Catherine the great. Those are historical facts. More than 50% of modern Ukrainians speak Russian at home.
