Yes I agree, our leaders in the West have been very naïve in assuming that people from this part of the world would readily embrace the concept of Democracy.
I encountered this problem many years ago, when I worked for an American coy., which had various business enterprises in Saudi Arabia. It initially employed people with a Middle Eastern background, on the basis that they would more easily adapt to the culture of the countryn (even magazines with just a slight hint of a woman's bare flesh were banned). They were surprised to discover that, although they were born in the USA, after a period of time in SA, they reverted to their (ingrained) ME culture.So the West is correct to be wary of the 'sleeping enemy within'.
