The gov don’t care, they reap the benefits through the fees. But saying that things are a changing. 2 out of the 3 distribution companies in NSW are 49% private now which will cost us more in the end as the new owners will want more profits. VIC are all private (have been for years) and there is moves underway to privatise QLD I believe.
There are numerous Microgrids (solar & wind generation) existing in Australia and many more in planning stage. Most Microgrids are privately owned not distribution companies assets therefore I assume the utilities have to pay rebates for feeds into their networks. Wholesale electricity prices are cheap from the generators but our rates are growing as the distributors loses customers as more and more households go to their own solar roof panels. The biggest road block at the moments is storage. The generation by coal, wind, solar etc is the easy bit. Once better storage batteries etc are available i.e bigger & better, watch that space.
