Russia invaded in 2014 and has been at war inside Ukraine for 10 years.
Before 2014, NATO was not an issue, Ukrainians were against joining. We had the security of the Budapest Memorandum in which Russia, USA, France and UK pledged to both respect and defend Ukraine's borders. In return of course Ukraine surrendered almost it's entire military including ballistic missiles which Russia is now using to kill Ukrainians in their beds.
The shift toward NATO support came only after Russia attacked.
As for Europe, Yanukovich was voted into power on a promise of closer ties with Europe. It was only when Putin bribed him with a $3bn "loan" that Yanukovich decided to join the CIS instead.
The people of 2014 in Ukraine wanted Europe not Russia, not the CIS and certainly not Putin or Yanukovich.
Zelensky was voted as President with 73% of the vote by these very same people.
I worked in investment banking in Kyiv from 2008 - 2022, I have since lost my home, my business and many of my friends.
