Maybe you do need to rethink your news sources. The US tried to overthrow the Syrian government using proxy forces. When that failed they did directly invade Syria, although they didn't make much progress, but the US military at this moment has bases in Syria. The US did invade Afghanistan, and Iraq. Then they set up pro US proxy governments. One has collapsed since US forced withdrawal and Iraq is still going, as good as "annexed", to US interests.
