Valves have better signal to noise ratio than transistors and higher gain. The FET changed that and more sensitive receivers became possible. I spent my time working on valve stuff. Military planes spend their life, mostly, how they were equipped when new, so valves would have been flying long after you were buying good transistor gear. Communications is the only upgrades I remember.

Not sure about the radar the Israelis fitted to their Mirages, I'll do a search out of curiosity but it is sometimes hard to find tech details. Few are interested.

Just remembered another plus for valves at that time: They are far more resilient to electromagnetic shock.

A diode junction, a transistor is merely two of them with a little technology added, were/are very sensitive. The receiver diode in the waveguide of powerful radar can be destroyed by careless handling in the fingers.
