The newly-elected Conservative government has pledged to increase the tax support offered to businesses that invest in crucial research and development (R&D)...The announcement is very welcome, especially for fast-growing smaller companies staking their futures on their ability to innovate. Several billion pounds of R&D tax credits are already being paid out each year and the scheme is especially generous to small and medium-sized enterprises. They receive around 85% of this cash, which provides valuable assistance to loss-making firms that might otherwise struggle to invest anything at all in innovation.
