This is my take on what biblical prophecy is about.

It's about giving people hope in times when the situation seems to be hopeless.

At the time that the Book of Revelation was written the Roman Empire seemed to be invincible and persecution would never cease. The Book of Revelation provided hope in that it pointed out that the oppression never lasts indefinitely. Armageddon came when persecution ceased. During the Nazi Regime it seemed that the Nazis were invincible and their regime would last for a thousand years. The Book of Revelation gave people hope that it would end. Armageddon came with the defeat of the Nazis. In one case the beast was represented by the Roman Empire and its leaders and in the other by the Nazi Party and its leaders.

Every generation thinks that the Book of Revelation speaks to their circumstances. In a sense it does, but not in a sense that their situation is a unique one - it applied not only to them but to every situation that entails persecution in some shape or form. Sadly every generation has its beasts to contend with. All generations need hope that the beats of their times will be overcome.

In addition we all have our own "beasts" that we have to cope with. This may involve split families and friends where the beast is the factor that causes the split. The battle of Armageddon comes with efforts to achieve reconciliation and the final success of these efforts.
