If the partial quote is read in isolation and out of context then it appears that Darwin thought that the idea that the eye could have been formed through a process of natural selection is absurd.

Here is the extracted quote in the actual text of Darwin's work. Darwin went on to explain that the idea is not at all absurd.

I wonder when the authors of creationist websites are going to stop this particular dishonest quote mining of Darwin's work. Creationists obviously rely on readers taking their work on face value without checking.

Lets see if we can summarise what Darwin says. If having eyes is a benefit ("as is certainly the case") and various types of eyes are inherited("as is certainly the case") it does not matter if it seems ABSURD that a perfect and complex eye evolved it should not be accepted as enough reason for not believing.
Darwin DID say it seems absurd any way you dice it. But then went on to say we "should not" dump his "theory".
It is not refuted that eyes are beneficial & inherited. What is refuted is that they came along without being inherited. Dogs inherit dogs eyes, cats inherit cats eyes & neither ever inherit eagles eyes, while worms are stuck with way less.
