I'm not a conspiracy nut either, but I agree there is something fishy about this.
I keep reading articles about physical demand being at a record highs. The Chinese are using submarines to search for gold, also a gold rush is adding to deforestation.
I think someone is trying to acquire this asset; (conspiracy) probably the Chinese government/central bank.
