There are two types of PoC tests for Coronavirus - molecular and serological - and BOTH have a role to play in combatting pandemic and managing healthcare.
Molecular PoC detects presence of viral nucleic acids (RNA in this case), whilst serological tests screen for presence of host immune response to infective agent. Both testing methodologies have technical limitations and are prone to false results. In chronological terms, infection with virus is time zero and 1-2 weeks later, host develops immune response, first with IgM, followed by IgG. This is basis of vaccination (HPV, Rubella, Flu).....isn't this what all the fuss is about....generating a corona vaccine?
So, if you serologically screened population, you would detect those who have developed immunity to corona, as opposed to population screening serologically negative but positive for virus.
The question then becomes.....Do you need to self isolate if you have immunity against corona? What about peace of mind for antenatal population and their healthcare providers?
Despite the RCPA coming down against serological testing, international sentiment suggests otherwise.
