It's really not that complicated Misty. Why is the rate of suicide and self harm higher among homosexuals and others? Partly, because of the pressures that they face when they don't feel accepted by their peers, family, and broader community. Is legalising gay marriage going to solve this? No, but it is just another step in the direction of breaking down the social walls between 'us' and 'them'. Soon, we will all be 'us' (and rightly so), and that is when mental health issues will no longer be disproportionately higher in prevalence among the LGBTI community.
