The World Bank has approved political risk insurance cover for Anvil Mining's Dikulushi copper and silver mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the small Toronto-listed miner said this week.

Anvil said it was the first guarantee that Miga, the insurance arm of the World Bank, had given for a mining project in the central African country that is richly endowed with minerals but has suffered decades of war and strife.

The guarantees by Miga, or the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, cover risks such as expropriation, breach of contract, and war and civil disturbance.

The Dikulushi mine in the DRC's Katanga province started production in October 2002. Output was recently expanded by about 50% to 20 000 t of copper and 1,6-million ounces of silver a year.
