1. Houses in Balmain have about 1/2 the area required for solar panels than is useful, plus too many shadows from neighbouring buildings. Better to target solar installations on a grander scale. 500 square metres & up is more realistic. (environmental benefits versus return on capital)
2. It takes many years to offset the energy costs involved in the manufacture of the solar panels. From memory the first seven years of operation only payback the energy required to manufacture the items. A false GREEN equation? The savings are made because the big users of electricity pay 1/100th of the retail price per KWH, make the pollution & then send the clean green product to the end user. In summary Green energy is basically shifting manufacturing & the pollution it creates to a different location. (China)
