A correction: 37 patients were treated over two years. The 17 patients refers only to those with small wounds with an average area of 21.6 cm2.
This paper is well worth reading but not for the squeamish!
There are some seriously compromised patients in this study. For example, all but one of the five cases highlighted had diabetes.
I especially like the account of the 85 year-old lady who refused to have split-thickness skin graft following BTM and instead left it to heal by secondary intention. The original wound was 40 cm2 but reduced to 6 cm2 after 3 months.
It’s interesting too that only 10.8% of the patients presented with burns.
The clinicians involved are clearly impressed by the benefits of using BTM.
